A root canal therapy is needed when the blood and nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected by decay or injury. If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canals of the tooth which will eventually lead to an abscess. If left untreated, the infection will spread and the tooth may have to be extracted.

What is the benefit of Root Canal Treatment?

Great benefit indeed ! An infected tooth that otherwise might require extraction, can be saved to contribute to a healthy and functional dentition for many years.

Who needs root canal treatment /When is root canal therapy advised?

Root Canal Treatment is advised for patients who have:

  • Severe sensitivity to hot and cold foods.

  • Spontaneous or throbbing pain while biting continuous pain that lasts for long time after consuming
    cold food and beverages.

  • Pain that worsens when you lie down.

  • Radiating tooth pain felt in the head, ears, jaws etc.

  • Tooth sensitivity on consuming sweet food items.

  • Swelling around the tooth.

  • Severe decay or an injury that creates an abscess (infection).

  • Fractured teeth.

Number of visits required to complete Root Canal Treatment

Depends on 2 things:

  • The tooth involved.

  • The extent of infection.

Do's

  • If the dentist has prescribed any medication to be taken prior to treatment, make sure to have
    the medications as prescribed.

  • Normal brushing can be continued on the Root Canal treated tooth.

  • After completion of RCT, CAPPING the Root Canal treated tooth with a CROWN is a MUST to avoid
    fracture and failure of RCT.

Dont's

  • The Local anesthetic effect will take about 2-3 hours to subside. During that time, don't eat solid food.
    You may accidentally bite your lips/tongue.

  • Please AVOID biting any hard food / meddling with tongue on the Root Canal treated teeth till completion
    of treatment.

  • DO NOT have very hot or very cold beverages during the course of the treatment.
